§ 4-20. Impoundment when running at large.

  • (a)

    Any dog running at large shall be subject to being picked up by any city police officer, public health officer of Broward County, or the Humane Society of Broward County. At the end of forty-eight (48) hours, in the event the dog is not claimed, the dog shall be turned over to the county dog pound.

    (b)

    Upon the capture of any licensed dog, the police shall make a reasonable effort to contact the owner thereof and notify such person of the detention of the dog.

    (c)

    A dog taken up under this section shall be returned to the owner, upon appearance and demand of possession of the dog; provided, however, that the owner of the dog shall at such time pay any and all costs to the city arising out of capturing and keeping the dog. These costs shall be a minimum charge of three dollars ($3.00) per day or any fraction thereof that the dog is held by the city. Payment shall be to the city official designated by the city manager. In the event the dog is unlicensed, the owner thereof shall be required, in addition, to obtain a dog license from county authorities.
